Pace

How fast do I need to be?

Not very. Here is what pace actually looks like on each run.

Wednesday

Pick a distance, not a pace

Two groups, 4K and 6K. Everyone in a group runs together at a pace that works for the people in it. There are no pace bands and no one is timed.

Saturday & Sunday

Typical social pace around 7:00/km

Conversational running along the waterfront. If you are a little faster or a little slower than that, you will still find company. Walk breaks are normal.

Nobody gets dropped and nobody gets teased about pace. That is the whole culture.

New here?

Your first run, step by step

Most people's worry is not the running. It is walking up to a group of strangers. Here is what actually happens.

  1. 1

    Join the Facebook group

It is where each week's run is posted. Read the pinned post.

  2. 2

    Pick a run

Wednesday 6:00 PM downtown, or Saturday or Sunday morning at the harbour (times on the cards above). Weekend is the easier first visit.

  3. 3

    Arrive 10 minutes early

Find the person doing the welcome. Say you are new.

  4. 4

    Pick your distance

Wednesday: 4K or 6K. Weekend: whatever the group is doing that day, and you can turn early.

  5. 5

    Run the route

The group stays together. Nobody finishes alone.

  6. 6

    Stay for five minutes

Stretch, chat, meet three people. That is the whole trick to sticking with it.

Safety and conduct

We run on public roads and paths. Single file when traffic needs it, call out hazards, and be kind: no one gets dropped, no one gets teased about pace. Wednesday nights in winter bring a headlamp and something reflective. Anything that makes you uncomfortable, tell one of the leaders, on the night or privately.

FAQ

Questions people ask before their first run

Do I have to be fast? +

No. Wednesday runs are organized by distance (4K or 6K), not pace, and the weekend runs are social at around 7:00/km. Say it is your first night and you will have company at whatever speed you run.

What happens on my first run? +

Arrive ten minutes early, say hello to whoever is doing the welcome, and tell them you are new. Pick your distance, run the planned route with the group, and you will be back where you started. Most people stay to chat.

Is there a fee or membership? +

No. Bronte Runners is free. Join the Facebook group so you see the weekly posts, then show up.

Can I walk or run-walk? +

Yes. The weekend runs are social, around 7:00/km with walk breaks as normal, and the waterfront path is flat and paved. On Wednesday the 4K group is the easier start.

What if I cannot keep up? +

Say so. On Wednesday take the 4K option; on the weekend the routes are out-and-back so you can turn early and still finish with everyone. Nobody is left to finish alone.

Where do I park? +

Wednesdays: street parking on Lakeshore Road East or the municipal lots off Church Street. Weekends: the free harbour lot beside the gazebo.

Can I bring my kids or a stroller? +

Weekend runs, yes. The waterfront path is stroller-friendly and the playground is right at the start. Wednesday runs are adult-paced road runs.

Do you run in winter? +

Yes, year-round. Routes shorten and stay on cleared, lit roads. Bring a headlamp for Wednesday nights from October to March.

How do I find out about this week's run? +

Every run is posted in the Facebook group a day or two ahead with the route and meeting spot. The schedule on this site is the standing plan.

Is the club connected to the Bronte Harbour Classic? +

Yes. Bronte Runners is a community partner of the Bronte Harbour Classic, a Father's Day race produced by TapeGeeks on the Bronte waterfront. Many club members volunteer, pace and participate in the event each year.
